Derek O'Neill's Casuarina Castle
Derek O'Neill's Casuarina Castle
Where?
Casuarina lies to the north of Angourie along the New South Wales coast, and less than half an hour’s drive from the border with Queensland. But as well as the more famous waves of D-Bah, Snapper, Kirra and Burleigh Heads, south of the Tweed River awaits a multitude of options, none of which suffer from the intense overcrowding that characterises the Coolangatta area.
Whose?
Initially O’Neill’s, although the property was put on the market not too long ago. O’Neill, somewhat confusingly, was head of Billabong’s European operations from ’92 until 2003, then became CEO of the whole company. After he was sent packing — with a $2.5 million termination pay out in his pocket — by the aforementioned Gordon Merchant, he hopped aboard rival vessel Vissla, helmed by another former Billabong big dog, Paul Naude.
What?
“Beachfront living at its most luxurious,” reckon Unique Estates Australia, who put the property up for sale at $5 million a year or two back. The two-storey house covers around 815 square metres, and has four guest bedrooms in addition to the master suite; other features include a garage with space for seven cars, a pool, and electric blinds and windows to maximise natural light and airflow. The house also enjoys direct access to the beach just 30m away, where the waves can be excellent.
