The good thing about most of the best surfers losing in Round 1 is that Round 2 is no longer the boring one that you (and the contest organisers) want to be over and done with as soon as possible. And if yesterday’s first two heats, won by Adriano de Souza and Filipe Toledo respectively, weren’t exactly classics, then the following two more than made up for it, thanks primarily to the fire and precision of Dane Reynolds — who looked sharper than he has done in a contest jersey in years — in heat 3, and Kelly Slater — whose two best waves, one of which should perhaps have been a 10, amounted to a heat total of 18.70 — in heat 4.
