Standing river surfing in Switzerland

With torrential downpours causing considerable flooding across Europe this summer, many beach resorts were forced to restrict access to lineups as a result of water quality issues.

However, flood events weren’t all bad news for surfing. One place where unseasonal downpours had the opposite effect was in landlocked Switzerland, where heavy rains created one of the largest and fastest standing river waves we’ve ever seen. Watch as Swiss rippers Cyril Inauen and Roland Hauser tackle the rapids despite the dangers of colliding with any fast-flowing debris or submerged rocks on wipeout… pretty heavy!
