In Part 2 of an exclusive interview with The Inertia, 11-time champ Kelly Slater choses to veer away from pure wave riding chit-chat and discuss more general issues that, as a ‘citizen of the world’, interest him. From contentious cultural issues such as politics and gun control, Kelly briefly highlights a few thoughts of his on these subjects, their complexity and how he relates to them personally.
As the biggest role model to bless the sport of surfing (and often the only professional surfer most unjazzed non-surfers have actually ever heard of), what Kelly thinks clearly influences others. So it’s apt that the interview should end on the subject of surfer stereotypes and what Kelly’s image has done to change the original counter-culture roots of the sport.
