Can you tell us a bit about your background?
My name is Alessio Saraifoger, born in Milan in 1983. I started surfing when I was about 15 at a surf spot close to Genova in the Mediterranean. Unfortunately I never got to practise my surfing too much because from Milan it was always far and expensive to get to the surf spots. Making videos has always been my passion. A friend had a camera that he would let me use, with that we started making skate clips. That's were it all began. Having a bunch of surfer friends I slowly started filming surfing. It's my passion not my job, I just love editing!
What do you do for a living?
Good question, I've had a bunch of jobs in Milan but at the moment I'm job-less. I've spent the last 5 months in Bali cruisin. I'm gonna be back in Milan on the 11th of may to find a propper job!
Can you tell us a bit about the Italian surf scene?
The Italian surf scene is pretty big these days, the level is rising considering the amount of waves we get. Leo [Fioravanti] is obviously the man, but there are other guys like Roberto D'amico, Alessandro Piu, Gianmarco Pollacchi and Mattia Morri that are also really good surfers in their own way. They might not become world champions but are noticed whenever they travel around the world.
Tell us a bit about this trip of yours to Bali for 'Romantic Streams'.
I've been in Bali for the last 5 months with Mattia. I met him back in Italy last summer while he was doing a surf comp in Tuscany. Mattia is addicted to Indo surf missions. He almost never surfs when he's in Bali. He's just busy looking at the swell charts and thinking about where to go next. The last 5 swells he's gone somewhere for each one. He loves to score barreling lefts. The edits you see here are from those last few missions.
Who would you say are your fave Italian film-makers?
Cinema wise, I'm not into anything really. I try to be creative on my own. But I get a bunch of inspiration and ideas from looking at old school movies from the 70's - 80's even though surfing clips are a different thing. I think I should start using Italian songs too.
Plans for the future?
I really want be in France in September so I'm going to go back to Milan and work my ass off till I make enough money to bail out of that shitty city. I feel out of place every time I go back there after traveling somewhere!
