Ian Walsh surfs Jaws on an inflatable inner tube

With the start to the Triple Crown and Hawaii season right around the corner, Red Bull thought this clip of Ian Walsh surfing Jaws on an inflatable hot dog might please. They weren’t wrong!

This what the Maui big wave thrill seeker had to say about it:

“The waves at Jaws were really solid with light winds early in the morning. A light bulb went off in my brother and my head, recalling a really fun flat day we had towing inner tubes behind jet skis. The idea was ignited and we wanted to try and get into a wave on an inner tube.

The hot dog came into the picture after calling a bunch of different places on Maui trying to track down a big inflatable animal or inner tube to tow into Jaws. Only one place on the entire island had one in stock that was big enough and it happened to be a gigantic hot dog. So a hot dog it was.

By the time we actually found the place to buy the hot dog, got it pumped up, launched the skis, and made our way to Jaws, the wind was a lot stronger, making it way harder than we thought to get into a wave. The waves seemed a lot bigger once we actually got out there, especially when you’re laying face down on a nine-foot hot dog.

“After a couple of failed attempts to get into a wave, we lost the hot dog to the rocks at the bottom of the cliffs in a massive set. Getting the hot dog off of the rocks and through the shore break was about a million times harder than retrieving a surfboard.

I finally got into a wave realizing that there was not a chance in hell you’ll ever be able to control what direction you want to go. A few out of control seconds later and I made it down to the bottom of the wave.

I almost dislocated my shoulder being violently ripped around underwater with the hot dog dragging me. The leash finally ripped in half and the hot dog made it’s way back into the cliff.

The rest of the surfing in this video edit is from two of the best swells we had at Jaws last season and one the greatest days of surf I have ever witnessed in Fiji.

Right now I’m at home for the first time since May, training to get everything ready for this winter. Hopefully we get a lot of massive days to learn a bit more about our equipment and to push ourselves as much as possible.

We’re looking at a pretty decent swell in a few days with light winds. It might be the perfect day for Hot Dog Round 2.

Thanks for watching,
Ian”
