GARRETT MCNAMARA TEAMS UP WITH UNLIKELY SURFBOARD SHAPER MERCEDES BENZ

A sample of designs from the MBoard Project

The MBoard project is the latest in a big wave surfboard tow-board design aimed at making the waves at Nazaré more rideable. Back in Portugal this past January to tackle the epic run of giant North Atlantic surf, Garrett McNamara made the most of his visit to the Zon North Canyon to test four new surfboard designs developed specifically for the waves at Europe’s infamous big wave spot.

Developed with Garrett over the last few months at Mercedes-Benz’s design and engineering centre in Stuttgart, the surfboard designs aimed to offer different rigidity/flexibility levels and weight distribution that might better deal with the faster speeds and severe wave chop that Nazaré is known for.

While at first glance these boards appear to partially resemble a previous collaboration between Garrett McNamara, Australian engineer Marc Newson and Dick Brewer, the German automobile giant is yet to disclose further details surrounding the exact construction of the boards and materials used. What the following video does reveal though is an idea of what speeds McNamara, Cotty and crew have been hitting down the giant moving mountains of water so that no further mainstream media interview questions go unanswered!
