Better Carves in 60 Seconds with Andy Criere

"Did you leave the towels out on the washing line?" a friend once asked me, as we were about to paddle out.

It seemed like a strange question. The apartment was a km or so away, and laundry was an odd topic.

"Because I'm probably gonna be doing some forehand gouges. It's gonna rain."

You too, surely covet an impressive carve. Yearn for powerful arcs. Wish to separate vast sheets of ocean from the wave face, to make, if only for a mere moment, liquid diamonds rain down in beautiful, sparkling spray.

Being able to throw down solid carves will not necessarily make you a better human. It mightn’t heighten your appreciation of the biosphere. It mightn’t take you to a new level of spiritual enlightenment.

But it’s a step in the right direction.

Popular surfing vernacular reveals the importance of clean, hard carving. Air is ‘game’ but rail is ‘work’. A staple, sure. Bread and butter, perhaps.

But done right, it’s organic sourdough baked in wood-fired oven and AOP Charentes-Poitou butter.

‘Where do I sign up?’ You beg.

Just hit play.

‘Who is this tall, trim goofyfoot champion?’ you enquire further.

His name is Andy Criere. He’s been on fire this summer in the comps, he’s been blowing up in freesurfs.

One way to let Andy into your life is to follow his Instagram
