Jake & Dooma Like Sooooooo Fired, 2013
Jake & Dooma Like Sooooooo Fired, 2013
Words by Gary Browningstone
Only once has a crew of commentators been clipped mid-event, and that event was the QPF2013.
The commentators were Jake Paterson and Damien Fahrenfort, and rumour had it that it was none other than Slater who lead the calls for their (one bald, one beautiful) heads, due to a general feeling of them not really taking it all seriously enough.
Their commentary of the kinda non-controversial non-event known as MarcoParko, or, if you prefer, Parkogate, went like this:
Jake: “I don’t know. I’m going to leave it up to the professionals. That’s what they get paid for…”
Dooma: “Let’s leave t up to the judges. It’s going to be a crazy finish.”
Jake: “(Bet a) Beer on it?”
Dooma: “I don’t know. I have a feeling they’ll give it to Joel.”
Jake: “World title points?”
To which then-ASP Tour Manager Renato Hickel responded:
“To have Web Announcers betting beers, guessing judges scores in almost every single wave, and telling thousands of web viewers that Joel would receive World Title bonus points, is completely unacceptable! A stain on a great Webcast.”
Now, we know what you’re thinking… the most controversial statement above is the claim that ‘thousands’ are watching the webcast…
Reigning world champ Parko did indeed win the heat 16.50 to 15.90, Dooma and Jake’s prediction ultimately proving correct, although most neutral observers felt Marc Lacomare, his opponent, had been hard done by. Funnily enough, Slater received a generous helping of World Title bonus points at the same event in 2006, when the then reigning world champ was extremely fortunate to sneak through his quarter-final heat by a half-point margin. Slater’s opponent on that occasion? None other than Jake Patterson.
Anyhow, a fairly tame affair all round, yet still one of the most semi-interesting things ever to happen during a webcast in France.
