Miguel Ximenez is part of the new generation of Portuguese surfers, but maybe because of his relaxed and humble attitude, just three years ago not many people would’ve said he’d ever be a standout; at least until he got on the top of the podium at the Eurosurf 2005. After finishing high school, and before getting into college, he decided to try and go further in surfing, doing trips and contests. In early 2006, he discovered the magic of Australia where he stayed for almost three months, surfing himself stupid every day, and enjoying the good life Aussie style. When questioned about his favourite trip so far, Miguel, who started surfing at 12, explains: “I’ve loved every surf trip I ever did… Australia for the lifestyle, Indo for the waves… right now I’m in the Azores having a great time with some friends.” Coming from a spot – Praia do Guincho – more famous for its great conditions for windsurfing and pretty Lisbon girls laying on the sand than epic waves doesn’t bother Miguel at all: “Sure, it’s a great spot for windsurfers with lots of wind and all, but you learn to make the most out of it even on the windy days, when you still can score some waves with no crowds around. Besides, there are so many glassy or offshore sessions when you get to surf some amazing waves. You just need to get to know the place.”
Miguel, a surfer who likes, and knows how to fly high with his boards has just started a training programme with Miguel Moreira (a well-know surf coach in Portugal) together with other top surfers, and he’s committed more than ever to surfing in every aspect. Will he keep flying ever higher? Lets hope so.
