“There’s still a long way to go yet,” reckons Caroline Sarran on her surfing career, a prudent statement from someone who’s about to become the most successful female surfer in Europe. From a lengthy list of competitive highs one particular performance stands out: Cloudbreak 2004, aged 19, Caroline received a wildcard for the WCT event and took the opportunity nearly all the way, winning the trials and ending fifth in the main event taking out now seven-time World Champ Layne Beachley on the way. That performance brought her much more than just having surfed well, she convinced herself that no one is unbeatable, perhaps the belief that has propelled Caro into a spot in the 2007 WCT. But she’s under no illusions as to the size of the task at hand, “I’ll keep my head on my shoulders, it’s a long road to the top and I’ll need to be going 200% to stay there and one day reach my ultimate goal, my lifetime dream, to win the World Title.” But with all this hard work required, isn’t she tempted to pursue a freesurfing career, rapidly becoming the more lucrative and glamorous side of women’s surfing? Caro answers with a wry smile. “I prefer competition. To be a pretty blonde with a nice tan, a board under arm in a boat looking cute is nice, but it isn’t really my thing.” Clear some space in the trophy cabinet then.
