Reubyn Ash Profile
Name: Reubyn Ash
From: Bude, Cornwall
Reubyn Ash has been a shining beacon in an average sea ever since the day he put his toes in the chilly north Cornish waters around his hometown of Bude. He’s won pretty much everything going since the age of 12. He has more championship wins than fingers. He’s landed more 360 airs than he has toes and drops turns with a style the envy of, dare I say it, every surfer in the nation.
Reubyn grew up as the supergrom whose big head turned heads and was instantly dubbed “the next Russell Winter" almost from day one. But he’s not the next Russell Winter. Rather than aggro and quick and hard, he’s more Machado than macho. He’s the most technically gifted surfer to come out of Britain in an age. He owns the smoothest style, possesses the best fit linking combos. Truth is though that he’d probably be quite happy to spend the rest of his days surfing his home pond reefs and points or doing seasons sitting in a hut on Simeule with his ‘second thoughts’ dominating every session, but his surfing is better than that.
He’s setting off on this year’s Euro Pro Juniors with a hunger born out of defeat at the World Juniors in Brazil where he wanted to finish his U18 days on a high. On the stage he thought he’d fizz, he popped. But with it perhaps came the realisation that the contest scene is a battle, not an exercise. A realisation that there’s something to get hungry about. Upon watching the later rounds Reubyn comments that he can surf as good as those guys. Now it’s time to stop the talk; we’ve seen the walk and it’s pretty good.
Reubyn rides for: Billabong, Gravis and Dragon.
