Tomorrow, the 2nd of June, marks the beginning of the 13-day waiting period which falls directly in the middle of Fiji’s prime surf season. The southern oceans have already pumped once with XXL swell and with another on the way (supposedly even bigger than the Code Purple one – for Tahiti that is) chances are more than promising that the top 34 will see more great surf at Cloudbreak for the Volcom Fiji Pro event.

Surfline’s latest forecast calls a short period S/SSE swell to build on Sunday before dropping on Monday, before a more favourably angled and larger run of SSW/SW swell hits Tuesday that could potentially run through the weekend of the 8th-9th.

Whatever the conditions, last week the ASP sent out a memo to surfers warning them to bring adequate big wave quivers. This time round there’ll be no excuses!

Newcomers to the stop this year include Volcom’s own Dusty Payne (pictured above). A lengthy ankle injury kept Dusty out of the comp last year so he’ll be making his first showing at the Volcom Fiji Pro along with all the rookies.

“I’m so excited to be heading to Fiji for the first time in my career to compete. I’ve watched every event out there and have always wanted to be a part of it. I can’t really put into words how excited I am to be healthy and ready to compete at one of my favorite waves in the world!” – Dusty Payne

Volcom has also selected Mitch Coleborn as its 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro Wildcard for the second year in a row, with the second wildcard being awarded to the winner of the local trials held by theĀ Fiji Surfing Association. Last year Mitch showed the world his amazing surfing prowess with a stunning round one victory over eventual event champion Kelly Slater and with his recent win in Brazil there’s little doubt about his present form.

“I’m excited to get back to Fiji and compete as a wildcard at one of the best stops on tour.
The waves are amazing and last year was one of the best trips of my life.” – Mitch Coleborn

In other disappointing news, Portugal’s Tiago Pires has had to pull out of the event as a result of the knee injury he sustained just before Brazil which continues to cause him trouble.
