The O’Neill Cold Water Classic (CWC) Scotland will kick-off this Tuesday, April 13, in Thurso on Scotland’s northern coast for its fifth consecutive edition. Known as the coldest surf contest on tour and attended by the world’s best searching for extreme conditions and world class waves, the O’Neill CWC Scotland is the first event of this year’s ASP European Star Series offering crucial ratings’ points and a coveted US$ 145,000 prizepurse.
Having witnessed exceptional surf and fantastic battles over the years, the ASP 6-Star rated competition will once again see the gathering of some of the world’s best surfing athletes, including former ASP World Champion Sunny Garcia (Oahu, HAW) and past event winners Adam Robertson (Victoria, AUS) and Russell Winter (Cornwall, GBR).
“The O’Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland is one of those events that make our sport so special,” ASP Europe President David Mailman said. “It is a unique and challenging destination that brings diversity to the tour and is a draw card that never fails to deliver for the best surfers on the planet.”
With both the ASP European championship campaign and the ASP International Star Series race on the line, the 128 surfers listed on the event heat sheet will all be hungry for triumph in Scotland’s challenging weather and waves, the event being mobile with a variety of options including the world class righthand pointbreak of Thurso East (Picture above).
Second stop of this year’s O’Neill CWC Series, Thurso’s 7°C waters are expected to become a battlefield when the event reaches its final rounds with current Cold Water Classic Series leader Stuart Kennedy (New South Wales, AUS) looking to display his progressive powerful attacks to try and make it two in a row, something no surfer has achieved since the launch of the O’Neill CWC Series.
“O’Neill has brought a fresh and unique concept to our ASP tour and Scotland was the first event of what became the CWC Series,” ASP Europe Regional Manager Gregoire Puget said. “The event is one of the most popular on tour and it is great to celebrate a fifth anniversary in 2010.”
With the confirmed attendance of former elite ASP Top 45 members Michael Picon (Capbreton, FRA), Tim Boal (Anglet, FRA), Tim Reyes (California, USA), Aritz Aranburu (Zarautz, EUK), Marlon Lipke (Algarve, DEU) and Jarrad Howse (New South Wales, AUS), the ASP 6-Star O’Neill CWC Scotland is set for exciting, world class action.
