THE QUIKSILVER “SEASESSIONS” EXPRESSION SESSION

More surfing goodness courtesy of the Quik. Check it out…

Seasessions are stoked to welcome Quiksilver as the sponsor of its expression session competition. Quiksilver have announced a 1000euro travel voucher for the winner and lots of spot prizes for innovative surfing. The Quiksilver Expression Session format is designed to allow the surfers freedom to go for it and bust big moves. The competition is limited to 10 surfers with 8 invited and is judged on best wave/ best move unlike traditional comps. Six of Ireland and the UK’s top surfers will be invited to take part with Spencer Hargraves, Aaron Reid, Nathan Philips, Luke Dillon and Cain Kilcullan among those all ready confirmed. The final two spots will be open to wildcards who will be selected from an open expression session held on the day of the comp.

Quiksilver are also looking for the best surfer instructor on a swell board. The swelly board challenge will pit surf instructors from different surf schools against each other to see who can really cut it on the learner boards. There will be team and individual prizes as well as recognition for the Surf School they represent.

Seasessions is also delighted to announce that the Irish premier of Kelly Slaters new movie “Cloud 9” will take place in a tepee on the festival site. Other surf movies such as Waveriders and The Power of 3 will be on display in the movie tepee.

The Quiksilver/Tonnta photo and you tube video comp is also underway with a Quiksilver winter wettys/watches and sunnies on offer and the best overall photo will be published in Tonnta. Entries to [email protected]. The top 10 photos in the running will be uploaded on the website http://www.seasessions.com/photos.html

SEASESSIONS MUSIC FESTIVAL
On top of all this there will be skate ramps on site (more info to follow) and of course heaps of music from acts such as Super Furry Animals, Kila, Mick Flannery, Kila etc etc. In only its 2nd year Seasessions has all ready been selected as one of the top 5 festivals of the Irish summer. Quiksilver’s Devonshire singer-songwriter, Ben Howard, will also be on stage during the music festival. Ben recently took the music world by storm after a spell binding and winning performance at the finals of the Red Stripe Music Awards in London. Ben wowed the 1600 strong audience with his “cracking lyrics, pitch perfect songs and exceptional guitar skills”. See him live at the Seasessions Bavari tent on Saturday 27th June at 7.30pm.

SEASESSIONS
Its already been named one of the top five music festivals of the summer. And that was before the full line up was announced!

With over 40 acts, surfing, skating, great food and bars all for 53.50 euro for a three day ticket, it is easy to see why Sea Sessions 2009 at the end of June is shaping up to be one helluva weekend.

After the event announced that Welsh supergroup The Super Furry Animals were heading the billing for the surf music festival on the beach in Bundoran Co. Donegal, the rest of the line up was going to have to be something special. And it is.

Keeping with the mainly Irish talent showcase theme of the event, last years show stoppers Kila are back again to headline the Friday night. The energy exuded by the band and the response from the crowd was likened to a natural phenomena, this is seven piece Horslips esc ensemble that HAS to be seen live to be appreciated.

Iconic DJ Andy Weatherall is one of the most respected names in the Irish and UK club scene and will be heading up the Sunday night line up with his trade mark style of mixes that has seen him work with bands such as the Happy Mondays and New Order.

One of the hottest commodities on the Irish Music scene, 2009 Meteor Award winner, Mick Flannery will be gracing the Main stage on Saturday night and is expected to be a huge draw with national radio names such as Pat Kenny of RTE and Alison Curtis of Today FM frothing over his lyrical style.

Another coup for the festival is securing Dub Reggae legends Zion Train who will be on the main stage on Friday night. Widely reputed as ‘one of the finest Dub Reggae Acts in the world’ this is set to be another landmark band for Sea Sessions.

If you haven’t heard Cork band Fred yet, you soon will. Hotly tipped to be the next big Irish success this lively act is going to be warming up for SFA on Saturday night.

A pair of well established names Donal Dineen of Today FM and David Kitt whose live performances and DJ sets last year were a big part of setting the ‘ultra cool’ tone for the event are back this year with a number of tricks and special guests up their sleeves!!

Local songstress Onya is back on home turf for the gig after a highly successful mini tour in the states and Europe since the beginning of the year. Onya will also be on the main stage on Saturday.

Really there are too many to mention. It is a bit of a corny phrase but in this instance it is true, there really are just too many bands to mention all of them in full. But we will try!
Rarely Seen Above ground (RSAG) is an act that has been getting a lot of exposure and is the sort of eclectic off the wall show that makes Sea Sessions stand out from the usual run of the festival crowd.

Juno Falls, who have been likened to the Irish Turin Brakes are another unique sound that show this is a festival not afraid to be brave. Although having recently been signed by a French record label it is safe to assume it is a band you are going to hear more of, a lot more of.

Hailing from Galway Charis are coming to Sea Sessions after a run of sell out shows in Galway’s Black Box. They have played with everyone from Lady Smith Black Mombassa to the late John Martyn and promise to bring a ‘highly energetic’ stage show.

Bavaria Tent
Aside from all the above action on the main stage, the Bavaria tent is going to have its own stage with the cream of rising talent coming along for the day.

The Hot Press ‘Battle of the Bands’ is going to see well known but unsigned bands from across the country coming to slug it out on stage in front a panel of music industry legends for the amazing prize of a recording studio session at Grouse Lodge and a slot on the Main stage for 2010.

The Bavaria tent will also see Red Kid, Ben Howard, Derry rockers, Farago, the Dead Flags and the hotly tipped for stardom 202’s from Dublin.

As if this wasn’t enough there will be some 15 DJ’s including the Reach DJ crew from Dublin who will be playing at various stages and venues throughout the weekend.
