Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, the Animal British Cup roars back onto the shores of Tolcarne Beach, Newquay. Taking full advantage of September’s bigger swell opportunities, the event will now run from Friday 28th – Sunday 30th September 2007, showcasing 3 days of pro/am surf comps, music and plenty of surfside action.
Sanctioned by the British Surfing Association, the Animal British Cup will be one of a handful of events that will help choose the 2008 British Surf Team. Comp disciplines include the Men’s and Women’s Open, Juniors, Longboard and bodyboard, with a total prize purse of £4000 to be given away. The entertainment doesn’t stop there as the Animal British Cup Weekend will also see two pumping nights of music as well as camping for those that want to take full advantage of the “Weekender”.
The Animal British Cup kicks off on the evening of the Friday 28th September with the launch party at the Koola Club, Beach Rd, Newquay and then the Animal Dance Party on the Saturday night with some very special acts to be confirmed.
Organisers Bare Feet Promotions had moved the original dates from July. Nick Webb from Bare Feet Promotions explains “The original dates were tied in with the K Festival dates and when that moved Animal were very keen to push the Animal British Cup later in the year to take advantage of the bigger swell opportunities in September. We are very excited about having the best names in British Surfing battling it out in what should be the best conditions”
Webb adds “We have planned the event to be a heavy mix of music, surfing and community involvement in short – Newquay at its best!”
Animal Event Manager Ciaran Henderson comments “As part of our 20th Anniversary we have made a major commitment to the grass roots of surfing here in Newquay with the opening of our new Animal Surf Academy at Tolcarne Beach. We want to teach people the sport of surfing using the best facilities and the safest environment. To celebrate this we are involved at the highest level with the sports development, by running an event that helps choose the British Team for 08.”
Down on the beach the action starts at 10am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Contest Director Pauly Jeffery adds “With the amount of competitors we will have entering these events we will no doubt be using all three peaks at Tolcarne including the legendary Wedge for the Body boarders”.
The Animal British Cup is just part of Animal’s year long 20th Anniversary celebrations and is a continuation of the brands commitment to core surf events in the UK.
