Set to finish tomorrow (late tonight in Europe if you want to catch it live), the contest at Snapper Rocks has as usual favoured local standouts and regular title contenders Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning who have both made it through to the semis. The big upset of the contest came in the quarters with an on-fire Michel Bourez eliminating last year’s event winner Taj.
“It’s a huge win for me,” Bourez said. “Taj (Burrow) is the defending champ out here and he’s such a good surfer in these waves. It’s been a great event for me. I’m feeling healthy and hopefully I can keep surfing well and make my first Final on tour.”
Finally Kelly who despite carrying several small injuries put together a couple blistering Kelly-esque last-minute performances to also make it through to the semis. On his up-c0ming heat against Mick, Kelly commented, “Mick and I have a lot of history together,” Slater said. “We both put our competitive heads on during events and he has a lot of experience out here. The home town crowd will be backing him big time and that’s always fun. Should be a good heat.”
With Kelly, Parko and Mick all through to the semis, the final day of competition should witness a nail-biting competitive finish.
