Round 3 was a tough one for many, but particularly 2-time world champ White Lightning who lost out to Brazilian Miguel Pupo and will be spewing that he’s got off to such a bad start this year. Rookies struggled too, with John John and Kolohe both exiting. The round’s standout performance came from Julian Wilson who finally found his form against Adam Melling and the highest heat total of the day, an 18.57. “I lost in this round last year in a close one against Taj (Burrow) and went on to lose a bit early in the next few events so I was nervous before that one,” Wilson said. “I did want to make a statement. In my first two heats I wasn’t myself – it didn’t feel like it was coming together for me. Then in that heat I felt a lot better, felt solid on my board and good to get some high scores.”
In the meantime, Round 4 and 5 also ran, without too many surprises though. All the main seeds showed off their experience in choice of waves and made it through to the quarter-finals (the main highlight coming from Parko and the event’s first perfect ride). Should be an exciting end to the contest. Stay tuned for more video highlights.
