New Jersey bodyboarder Dylan McGinn was without a pulse when North Shore lifeguards and local Jamie O’Brien pulled him out the surf at Pipeline yesterday.
Six time bodyboarding world champion and off-duty lifeguard Guilherme Tamega was the first to reach the unconscious McGinn, who had pulled into a closeout and knocked himself out on the reef. Next on the scene was Jamie O’Brien; he, Tamega and the Pipeline lifeguards got the casualty out of the impact zone and back to shore, where the lifeguards commenced CPR. Video footage captured by João Ricardo Images shows McGinn supine and bloated on the sand, gurgling sea-water as the lifeguards prepare the defibrillator. According to Hawaii News Now, McGinn regained a pulse on the beach thanks to the lifeguards’ sterling efforts, and was breathing on his own when he was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
