Europe’s Michel Bourez scored the wave of his life at the Billabong Pro Jeffrey’s Bay today, securing a 10 point ride on his way to dumping former World Champion and current world number five, Mick Fanning out of the competition.
The day did not start well for the Euros with Jeremy Flores missing the cut against Australia’s Dean Morrison by just 0.50 points, leaving Bourez flying the flag. While many had backed the Tahitian rookie to do well at JBay, his performance looks like being one of the standout rides of the day, performing a huge hack in between two of the longest barrels on his way to a perfect 10. This followed from a solid early wave score of 8.27 for an overall heat total of 18.27, one of the highest heat totals of the day. With just minutes left on the clock, Fanning failed to find a wave to match. Bourez will now match-up against fellow second round charger Dane Reynolds in round three.
