O’Neill Surf de Nuit Hits Anglet

On August 14th from 7pm, the beach of Le Club in Anglet is without doubt the place to be this summer!!! The O’Neill Surf de Nuit (night surfing) presented by Orangina will gather the most progressive surfers from around the world for a breathtaking evening ‘Air Show’!

O’Neill will also offer free surf clinics all day, movie screenings, and even the opportunity for local surfers to qualify for the main event. It will be an unforgettable day, a unique event, and the ultimate reflection of the O’Neill lifestyle: “First in, Last Out”.

A GROUNDBREAKING SUMMER EVENT
Launched by the Anglet tourism office 15 years ago, the O’NEILL SURF DE NUIT has become year on year an integral part of the summer in the Southwest of France – for locals, tourists, surfers, or anyone curious to see another side of surfing and an awesome show.

Traditionally organized on the evening of August 14th – the most crowded period of the season – the Surf de Nuit has become one of the most popular events on the Basque Coast, and attracts thousands of people each year (approx 10,000 people in 2007), who literally fill in every last square centimetre at the world famous “Chambre d’Amour”.

A UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT
With its world famous waves and a seafront lined with restaurants, bars and surf shops, the stunning area of “Chambre d’Amour” easily stood out as the perfect venue for this event. The birthplace of surf on this coast in the early 60’s and the choice location for a host of surf contests since then, the two beaches of “Les Sables d’Or” and “Le Club” are seeped in the history of the sport.

Surfers have for years travelled from all corners of the earth to discover the infamous powerful beach breaks. With rocks overhanging the waves and a promenade along the shore, this is the perfect natural amphitheatre from which to enjoy the show.

A FIRST-CLASS CASTING
O’NEILL and its partners have pulled out all the stops to offer a spectacular show – and the guestlist of surfers is just the start. Some of the most progressive surfers in the world have been invited to compete in the evening’s entertainment.

Not only will we see former ASP World Tour star Cory Lopez take to the night skies, but also current World Tour campaigner and Anglet local Tim Boal will be in the water showing off his skills. Alongside them will be legendary free sufer Ry Craike. The Australian star of many an amazing surf video will no doubt be a frontrunner for the 1000euro prize money with his array of explosive tricks.

Also part of the evening will be the explosive talents of Portuguese surfer, Justin Mujica, and British surfer Sam Lamiroy as well as ASP World Tour hopefuls Christophe Allary, Charly Martin and Hugo Savalli.

Former ASP World Tour star Caroline Sarran, and WQS campaigner Amandine Sanchez will be doing it for the girls. And also on show will be the young surf talent of the French O’Neill team Antonin de Soultrait, Paul Tesson, Gaspard Larsonneur ,Thomas Oueld Mallem, as well as free surfer Xavier Leroy and big wave rider Stephane Iralour.

Former winner of the event Jean-Charles Debray, a.k.a Jex, from Guadeloupe and the master of new aerial evolutions will also be there to fire up the crowd and the night with his innovative and spectacular surfing.

SURF, SOUND AND LIGHTINGS
As this is no ordinary surf event, The O’Neill “Surf de Nuit” presented by Orangina breaks tradition by mixing surf with sound and a little bit more…

Who needs the sun to surf?! Instead, the sun will be replaced by a unique lighting system featuring seven elliptical helium balloons, which will fly over the waves and the crowds creating a unique magical atmosphere to the night. Rock Folk Band Naosol & The Waxx Blend will play on the “Sables d’Or” dyke, overhanging the ocean. And Rob Sawyer and DJ Maff will keep the music going throughout the night.

A huge screen broadcasting all the action live from the water will stand on the dyke to make sure the audience don’t miss a piece of the show. The screen will also show a selection of surf films during the day from 2pm.
