No Fear Mexican Surf Fiesta
The No Fear Mexican Surf Fiesta presented by Sobe is set to kick off this Friday, October 13th, 2006 at San Miguel in Baja California. The three-day Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) event will be experiencing its first year as a two-star event with 128 standout surfers all vying for the $25,000 prize purse as well as valuable ratings points.
The event, which has a reputation for attracting solid swell to the cobblestone righthand point, has long been a favorite for competitors and the ASP upgrade will only enhance the appeal of venue. Californian Matt King, who placed third in last year’s event, looks forward to the added ratings points and prize money that will be offered with the upgrade.
“I’ve always thought the event should be an ASP two-star," King said. “All the guys that come down for it are super talented and there are always great waves. Last year, we even had guys like Rob Machado and Chris Ward competing in it, and that’s when it was a one-star!"
King, who has struggled this season as the result of an ankle injury, is once-again healthy and looking for a repeat of last year’s performance: "The event went really well for me last year as I made the finals," King said. “It’s an excellent event and I’ve been competing down there for years. I’m just starting to feel strong again after injuring my ankle and I’m looking for a big result in San Miguel to reignite my season."
Round One will hit the water this Friday, October 13th, 2006 at San Miguel, Mexico with the finals commencing on Sunday, October 15th, 2006.
