MODERN COLLECTIVE SANTA CRUZ PREMIERE

Went to see Modern Collective at the Del Mar Theatre last night in downtown Santa Cruz, starring Dane, Jordy, Yadin, Dion, Mitch Coleborn and Dusty P. The world premiere was the night before in LA , director Kai Neville explained before the screening, so last night was only the second showing, like, ever.

The dress code at these things is generally pretty gnarly, they’re tight on that shit. The SC Mod Col dress code is flannel shirt n beanie. Cory got a bit creative and riské and rocked an urban flatcap but they let him in coz his flannel was tight.

Dane n’ chums on their way in to le forest. Putain de merde! I thought it was a secret spot, those cheeky monkeys!

The sound system was well loud and pumped out some blistering beats, felt like largin to Sasha at Pacha circa 1995. If you were an Australian, you would have called it ‘duf duf’ or possibly even ‘techno’. Despite that pumping Berlin Love Parade riddim, I fell asleep just after the opening France section. Not because the movie was shit, it was really good. It’s just the jetlag. I am still struggling with jetlag. Cory said I was snoring loudly. I did wake up and see the Safi section before nodding off again though.

Choke chicks in France, brah.

Dion Agius does rad moves but looks kinda funky. He looks like a little action man in a wetsuit scaled down. When he does a backhand bottom turn it looks a trifle like Derek Ho bottom turning at 4ft Honolua in the Hpac series. Not when he gets to the lip though. Dane, of course, won the heat. The other dudes are rad, but they’re not Dane, are they? Jordy’s surfing was pretty hefty. He doesnt look like mini action man. He was at the premier rockin a denim overshirt atop a flannel hoodie. During the outgoing credits he says, “She was gegging for at” (she was gagging for it). Then he falls over. Him falling over was my favourite, and the crowds too. We all laughed out loud.
