Micah Byrne won his first ASP WQS event on his home sand of Huntington Beach at the two-star Vans Pier Classic presented by Jack’s Surfboards this past weekend. Fun 2-4ft surf was on hand for the entire week of the Vans Classic which culminated last weekend.
Byrne came into the event with a definite chip on his shoulder after coming up just short in last year’s final. “It was my goal to finish better than I did last year and I knew that was going to be pretty hard since I finished third,” Byrne said.
A patient Byrne sat and waited for the waves with big scoring potential and his strategy paid off on his first wave of the final. A head-high left wedged towards the pier and Byrne used his beyond vertical approach to score an 8.25.
“It had a really nice section to throw down on!” Byrne said. Micah then went to his forehand to seal the deal with a 5.75 on a right that he blasted to the beach. “I’m so stoked right now, really pumped. I had a lot of family support on the beach and there is nothing like winning at your home spot!”
