John John Florence has gone and done it!
The 24-year old from Oahu started the day essentially needing to finish ahead of Jordy Smith to clinch the title. This he did by taking down Kolohe Andino in the first semi-final, surviving an interference scare in the early moments and going on to dominate the heat. Florence’s win eliminated Medina from the title race; Smith, the event’s form surfer, had to beat Conner Coffin to keep it alive. It was the Californian, however, who emerged on top at the end of a tight heat in which the lead changed hands multiple times, Coffin’s 9 point tube ride with several minutes to go ultimately sealing the deal both for Coffin and Florence.
