The 2008 UK pro surf tour is off in full force and this year Gul International is staging its tour event at Porthmeor Beach in St Ives Cornwall on the 30th and 31st of August. The event comprises of several categories including both men’s and ladies open divisions as well as a groms section. The Uk’s Top professional surfers and various international competitors from around the globe will battle it out for a share of the £2850 prize purse and valuable tour ranking points.
The Gul Open, which in past years has been held at Fistral beach Newquay in the colder months of November has moved to the summer series to utilise the summer tourist crowds in a hope to further promote surfing as a sport. Sam Franklin from Gul commented “ Porthmeor beach St Ives provides a fantastic arena to show case some of Europe’s top athletes such as British Open Champion and Gul team rider Mark ‘Egor’ Harris, not to mention the grass roots talent.” Sam continues “The Competition will be the biggest surf event for the area for several years and should benefit the local surf industry and community”.
This is the 2nd time the tour event has been held at Porthmeor Beach; the last time was August bank holiday 2006. Dave Reed Event Director commented “This is a fantastic event for the UK Pro Surf Tour, I would like to thank Gul for recognising the need to support events in the West of Cornwall where the level of surfing is extremely high and surfing community is growing rapidly” adding “this event will give the local surfers an opportunity to match their skills with some of the best in Europe.”
‘Relentless’ energy drink, one of the Pro Surf Tours main sponsors will be giving a cash prize for the best move of the competition and Gul will announce various other activities as the competition date draws closer. In all, the Gul Open has the potential for being a highlight in the summer surf calendar and a date to remember.
