Basque WCT competitor Aritz Aranburu was visibly one of many to be a little rattled by the news!

In other Great White news this morning, it's just been reported that a 3.5 metre white pointer was caught and killed 300 meters off Greenmount Beach in Coolangatta, right next to Snapper Rocks.

The largest caught in over seven years on the Gold Coast, the shark was sighted by a life-guard on a jetski early afternoon while that morning the Roxy Pro's quarter-finalists had warmed up waiting for the contest call (which fortunately turned out to be a lay day!).

The decision to kill the shark came from the Shark Control Program manager Jeff Krause, “The successful removal of this dangerous shark from a popular swimming beach was particularly important," Krause commented. “The Quiksilver Pro surfing competition is currently underway at nearby Snapper Rocks."

Australia's current controversial shark cull policy apparently stipulates that sharks caught on drum lines that are larger than three meters are shot/brain spiked and disposed at sea.

With the recent culling programme that's also been put in place in Reunion Island, the men-in-grey have certainly been having a bit of a rough time of it lately. Hopefully current satellite-tagging and scientific research on the habits, migration patterns and food sources of the world’s Great White population will help to sort all of this mess out.

Cold Coaster Dean Harrington from the Mad Huey’s also had a close encounter with an eight foot tiger shark not so long ago.
