Adriano De Souza has won the Rip Curl Pro at Bells, defeating rookie Nat Young in the final. Adriano had early defeated the form surfer of the event Jordy Smith in the semi and moved up to the third in the world title rankings, going into the next event at his home in Brazil.
“This is the most important event on tour to me,” De Souza said after the final. “Guys like Andy Irons, Kelly Slater, my hero Mick Fanning, they have all rung the Bell. I have been coming here a lot of years. I love the place. It has been a tough time for me recently. I started 2013 without a sponsor for the first time in many years. I had to believe in myself that a company would believe in me and one did. I have to say thanks to Pena for believing in me. I have a lot of people to thank, but all I want to do right now is ring the bell.”
With Slater and Parko’s early exits at Bells, the the world title race is blown wide open, with a bee’s dick separating the top five surfers. Bells again provided a pretty epic Easter for pro surfing, from three foot Rincon to 10 foot Bowl. While some may question the quality of the wave, after all Bells is not even the best wave at Bells, but in terms of history, crowd and rail surfing, it place in pro surfing lore was again entrenched.
