Chris Noble wins the Scottish Open
Finisterre has developed a different way of doing things over the years, getting innovative with fabrics and sourcing, reviving a dying breed of sheep….. When it comes to their athlete model, it’s no different.
“Conventional sponsorship has never been an interest to us, the greatest things in this world are always the simplest ones, and for us, it's all about the relationships", remarked Finisterre Marketing Director, Ernie Capbert.
When Finisterre got in touch with Chris Noble, it was sparked by an unusual encounter. “We paddled out at Thurso and this guy came paddling over to us and told us that we got to be kidding, that you can't do that", said Finisterre Founder, Tom Kay. "It was an onshore day, about 4/5 foot, wasn't epic Thurso and there was a guy out there protecting it, keeping it right", remarked Ernie Capbert.
Chris and Finisterre have been tied up ever since. “He's a Product Tester of ours and one of the best we’ve ever had. When a guy loves something so much, they can do some brilliant stuff, like paddle out and tell you to go home. In this day in age, where there's no respect for a man’s home break, a break that is continually being trounced on and exploited, you've got to respect Chris’s way", remarked Tom Kay.
Finisterre have never asked anything of their athletes, no 'must compete in 12 competitions a year', no pressure on gaining coverage or thirty page contracts with a whole bunch of clauses in them. Just do the things you love, keep inspired and ultimately this will help them go on to become even greater.
This past weekend, Chris, with a Snugg/Finisterre wetsuit and some brilliant conditions, won the Scottish Open. "Chris had to grab a flight out almost immediately after the event to carry on with work offshore, but I got a text at 5:30 in the morning and all I imagined was Chris, alone in some departure lounge, celebrating on his own, the very thought, fires me up", remarked Ernie Capbert.
‘We're over the moon with his result, we never asked or expected it, but these little wins are the ones you tip your hat to', remarked Tom Kay.
Finisterre is a small outdoor clothing company, specialising in fabric innovations.
