The Bundoran Warm Water Classic will be heating up Tullen Strand in Ireland from 30 June – 1 July 2007. The Retro Surf board comp will be on the Saturday and a Billabong Grommet Challenge (U18, U14, U10) contest on the Sunday.
There will also be a paddle challenge on the Saturday evening and DAC will hold a skate Contest on Saturday Evening. The event is held at the beginning of summer and is open to all – however to enter the surf comps you must be an ISA member.
The boards for the retro board comp will be provided and they all have their own story. At the start of each heat every surfer will draw a straw to see who gets first pick. The grommets are encouraged to take on the old boys. Great prizes will be on offer with an epoxy board for first. Feel free to nominate a board. The boards so far include an Irish Team board from the Euro Surf 1985 which was held in Bundoran-Rossnowlagh complete with Guinness spray job. The second is a 7’3’’ which was used in the groundbreaking surf movie Litmus in 1994. John Frank and Joel Fitzgerald travelled the world with the board and never used a board bag on any flight. Also included are the twin fin that Mark Richards used in the Quiksilver masters and the board Kevin Naughton took on his epic travels of Africa in the 70’s.
During the day an Expression Session will be called with €200 being offered for the best move. If there are a lot of competitors heats will be held. A paddle challenge around Rougey on swell boards will pit surfers against lifeguards and DAC are holding a skate comp at their Skate ramp.
On the Sunday the Billabong Grommet challenge will take place. There are 3 categories U18, U14 and U10. The most promising surfer over the weekend will win a sponsorship for 1 year with Billabong for a year. Performance in the retro board comp will be taken into consideration.
There will be loads of great prizes on offer and the emphasis is on all having a good time. Entry is free but to guarantee entry contact Bundoran Surf Co (071 98 41968) or Surfworld (071 98 41223).
