Oakley is proud to announce that effective immediately, free surf innovator Bruce Irons has joined its global surf team and signed an endorsement contract to wear the company’s eyewear.
“We expect Bruce to play a key role in the continued progression of Oakley’s surf team,” said Oakley Sports Marketing Manager of Surf, Ronny Nelson. “A commonality among our surfers is their ability for individual expression of their own unique talent – Bruce’s creative approach to surfing will fit right in with Chris Ward, Nathan Fletcher and Dustin Barca.”
Raised on the North Shore of Kauai, Bruce started surfing at age seven, charging Pipeline at a very young age which proved vital to his career development. He enjoyed successful amateur results in the United States before turning to the world’s professional circuit after graduating high school. After finishing second and third place at the Pipeline Masters in 1998 and 2000 respectively, he won the 2001 ASP World Championship Tour when he defeated eight-time world champion Kelly Slater.
After a solid three years of continuing to hone his skills on the world tour, Bruce came back strong in 2004 at The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, an event considered by many as the most prestigious in all of professional surfing. In forty-foot surf at Waimea Bay, Bruce took down all competition and captured the event in front of 20,000 people.
