Due to be completed last autumn, work on the Boscombe Artificial Reef had to be put on hold until spring due to unworkable winter surf and weather conditions and as a result the total expense of the project is now estimated to reach the £3m mark, then costing up to £100,000 a year to maintain. As quoted in the Guardian, a Tory councillor Basil Ratcliffe said: “Someone should be given the bullet over this … these are big sums that could have been spent on something else.”
