Pipeline has been in a punishing mood this season, and staff at Kahuku Medical Center have been working overtime. Evan Geiselman, Mikala Jones, Owen Wright, and now Bede Durbidge can all be counted among its recent patients, after the latter fractured his pelvis in two places in his Round 3 heat against Keanu Asing. Durbo took off very deep and very steep on a bomb at the heat’s start, was bucked headfirst as his inside rail re-engaged, and resurfaced a few seconds later in a world of pain. The agony, coupled with justified concern for his immediate safety, was written across the brawny Australian’s face; fortunately the water safety team was quickly on the scene to remove him from danger.
“Definitely wasn’t the way I wanted to finish the season,” wrote a partially recuperated but still bed-bound Durbo on Instagram a few hours later. “I ended up fracturing my pelvis and displacing it. I’m going under the knife in a few hours to get plates put in the front and back. Thanks to the water patrol and doctors at the event for taking care of me. Also my wife , family and friends for all the support and love. What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.”
Let’s hope he’s right, and that Bede and his pelvis return with renewed vigour and thrust in 2016.
