Surfing’s ever-growing tribe of wave riders have once again gathered at the annual U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California to celebrate all things wavey and watch the world’s top pros perform at their best. Conditions were small but rippable for Day 1 of the contest, and seemed to play in favour of much of the younger generations’ game (and Brazilian contingent). Upsets included early exits for Mick Fanning, Taj Burrow, Owen Wright, Matt Wilkinson. The Euros also had a pretty hard time of it, with only Tahitians Michel Bourez and Alain Riou making it through their heats. Kelly still looking real dangerous though… can he make it 2 in a row?
