This is probably the first time we've run a story based on information from Furniture Today, which describes itself as "Number One In The Furniture Industry", and brings you all the latest furniture-related news from across the world.

Further to last week's news that he had bought a majority share in surfboard company FireWire, Kelly Slater is teaming up with retail brand PBteen to design a 40-piece line of home furnishings, which will be fashioned from sustainable materials and recycled fabrics.

The range will include furniture, bedding, lighting, wall art and decorative accessories, all aimed primarily at the younger generation. The furniture will be made out of wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, the rugs out of recycled fabric, and the bedding out of 100% organic cotton. The collection is due to hit American stores in April.

“I’m really excited to be working with PBteen on this project," said Slater. “While they’re not part of the endemic surf market, I’m honored that PBteen has seen me as someone who can help a broader audience understand the need to use recycled, repurposed and organic materials.

“Global conservation is a focal point of the capsule collection and it falls right in line with the change and direction I’m working towards, on a professional and personal basis. In collaborating with PBteen, we are creating a subtle and natural feel with this collection — something that has an authentic appeal for teens and their parents alike."

PBteen, which caters specifically for the teenage market, is part of home furnishing store chain Pottery Barn, which in turn is owned by high-end American consumer retail company Williams-Sonoma. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Kelly Slater on this collection as there isn’t a better ambassador for the surf lifestyle," said Sandra Stangl, president of Pottery Barn Brands. “As a mother with two teenaged kids who are avid surfers, I have seen the rise of the surf lifestyle up close and feel this is not just a trend, but a movement that is here to stay.

“While collaborating with Kelly, he challenged our team to bring sustainability to every part of the Kelly Slater for PBteen collection," Stangl added. “We are proud to say this is the most environmentally responsible collection we have brought to market to date. We believe it’s very empowering to show tweens and teens, regardless if they surf or not, that they can make a difference for the world’s resources by being mindful of their personal choices."
