It was Brendon who first suggested this part, but Kai assented enthusiastically.
“That’s my number one [section], hands down,” says Brendon. “That whole movie was huge for me, but that section in particular’s a favourite . . . I used to watch that before like every surf. I’d be waxing up my board and watching it . . . I burned the DVD out, it didn’t work anymore.”
“I remember the first time watching [First Chapter], I was kinda so baffled that I didn’t really know what just happened,” agrees Kai. “I was like, ‘What the fuck is this?’ We were just baffled. And then the more you watch it the more you like it, and the more you start to appreciate it . . .
“First Chapter was revolutionary shit. Dane sorta came out of nowhere and he was so young and just so powerful. Just the whole repertoire, he pretty much did everything you can do on a surfboard.”

And what about working with Dane? Does he frustrate Kai as much as he seemed to frustrate Jason Muir in First Chapter?
“I’ve worked with him for a long time, and I know he has a good aesthetic. I’m on par with his vision so I trust what he likes, and I know he’s very particular about waves and about everything, so we kinda worked together a little bit more [for his part in Cluster]. But I think he was stoked in the end. He’s a very, very particular person, but yeah some guys don’t give a fuck, they’re just like, ‘Sick, I’m stoked to be in it, you did a good job’. . .”
