Several hundred sharp intakes of breath were just about audible above the boom of a mesomorphic Pipeline lip as it landed inches from the head of Fred Patacchia Jr., AKA Freddy P, during his Round 3 heat at the Pipe Pro on Saturday. Thankfully Freddy emerged from the almighty beating in one piece, although the same couldn’t be said for his board. He later uploaded a photo and the above video of the wipeout to his Instagram, adding, “Can’t say I didn’t try. Haha. This one was a bit scary. Lost the heat, but lucky to walk away & surf another day.” Hats off.
