Clay Marzo Victim of Alleged $400,000 Fraud

Hawaiian freesurfer Clay Marzo and mother Jill are the victims of an alleged $400K fraud, as reported in Maui News yesterday.

51-year-old Felicidad Rivera also from Maui, bookeeper to the Marzo’s between 2009 and 2015 was indicted on 13 counts of wire fraud, allegedly embezzling more than $400,000. She pleaded not guilty on Monday in the U.S. District Court in Honolulu, with bail was set at $50,000.

“I leaned heavily — apparently too heavily — on her and part of me feels pretty stupid because how could this go on for so long?” Jill Marzo Clark told the Maui News. “But when you don’t understand numbers and hire someone to do numbers, how do you know? It looked to me like it started off little and then she figured out she could do it and it became more and more until she got sloppy.”

“I told him (Clay). . . she took pretty much all of your money and put you in debt and took a lot of my money,” said Clark. “Most people would’ve been outraged and yelling, but he looked at me and he said, ‘Well, she must have needed it.’”

Marzo shot to fame in the 2000’s as a member of Quiksilver’s prodigious Young Guns, before being clipped in Quik’s 2012 ‘bloodbath’. He is known for a signature Clayback snap as well as being one of the finest exponents of lefthand tuberiding on the planet.
