TEN SURF PHOTOGRAPHERS TO FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM
(BUT MAYBE NOT IN REAL LIFE)
It’s hard to know if surf photographers were once-nice folk who turned once they found their profession, or rather were always bad eggs, and thus were drawn to the vocation for that reason.
No seriously, some of them are OK.
Surfing has made celebrities of its photographers, in a way few other sports have. Can you name many football photographers? Do you know who shot Usain Bolt’s 9.58s in Berlin?
Of course not… because, well, who fucken cares?
But with surfing, the lensmen at times bask in a glow somewhere between fame and infamy. And we should be glad.
Some of them are a lot more interesting than the pros.
Many are prickly, opinionated, quick to temper and even quicker to online spat amongst themselves. Bravo!
You should follow them and respect them and recognise the sacrifice they made: to not surf when it’s good, rather to work instead. And they did this to stoke you out, kinda.
If you get chatting to one, be courteous, but be on guard.
If they tell you about the days of film, tell them you felt it was all ruined the day neolithic man switched from cave painting to papyrus.
Then, in the ensuing confusion, make your excuses and leave.
