CURREN IS NOT JOHNSON, WESTSIDERS IS NOT THE BRA BOYS

Last night I had the misfortune of watching Westsiders in Haleiwa. It was really long and pretty pants. If you’ve seen the trailer then you’ve seen all the best bits. I did the head nod thing falling asleep many times and wasn’t the only one. When it was over everyone leapt to their feet and bolted doorwards. I should temper that by saying that last night’s show was in aid of a good cause, the Mauli Ola Foundation, which helps kids with cystic fibrosis surf as a way of treating their condition. I heard a rumour that the executive producer sunk 400 large into the project. Jesus… My vote would have been to hand over the 400 grizzle straight to the Mauli Ola Foundation. Those guys do awesome work. (http://www.mauliola.org/)

The exit poll from those I asked gave it 3/10. I thought that was pretty generous.

Before the movie started Tom Curren (him again???) got up on stage and crooned out three awful tunes. Jack Johnson was an OK surfer and pretty OK song n geetar man (if you like his stuff, which incidentally I dont, but you get the idea, he can do it). Curren on the other hand was a god-like surfer, and pretty middling to average to not-that-good crooner. I never really understood why shy, retiring types feel the urge to get up on stage in front of a crowd and sing into a mic, but I just wished he hadn’t. But don’t take my word for it. Here’s a clip of the great man. I’m sorry if this sounds sacrilegious, but not that sorry. TC, J-Bay in the pink wetsuit, c.91 yes, on stage with the geetar, any colour get up, anytime, no.
