Fourteen year old Roxy Surf team phenom, Carissa Moore became the first girl to win Quiksilver’s ‘King of the Groms’ contest held at Kewalo’s in Hawaii last weekend.
Carissa became one of the best overall young surfers in the world, defeating her male counterparts in the “King of the Groms” contest. Touted now as the “Queen of the Groms”, Carissa arrived in key form, locking down solid scores from start to finish, and out-surfing the male entrants in the comp.
With Kewalo’s pumping out 3-6 foot peaks all day, the unsurpassable super-grom showed the male competitors that gender no longer has meaning when it comes to surf skills. Moore remained calm, cool, and calculated as she glided through each heat all the way to the finals.
Apparently taking on the ASP Women’s WCT elite has paid its dividends in the confidence and experience department. Carissa had finished 2nd to ASP 2005 Women’s Champion Chelsea Hedges at Snapper earlier this in the year after cleaning house on 7 X Women’s Champ Layne Beachley, twice.
