'Like surfing barefoot' ? Let's find out....

Surfers tend to don booties when water dips under the 16 deg C isotherm, -ish.

Personally, I don’t like to adjust my rubber according to ambient temperature, but rather dates on the Gregorian calendar. Much like the British seasider (usually the dad) grimly announcing, “I’m on ‘oliday, I’m wearin shorts” regardless of the weather, I too tend to make the switch to boots no sooner than Dec 1st.

That, usually, is a few weeks too late, but that isn’t the point. I can remember hobbling on the double yellow lines back to the car to stay off the agony of post-surf asphalt in those late November days of my formative years, but hey, I stuck to my guns.

Anyway, Wetty have come up with a delicious range of booties that are unlike most others in the modern surf boot era. Rather than packing in a bunch of (what they, presumably, would consider unnecessary) features, hidden split toes, velcro adjustments, drawstrings, grips and grappling hooks, they’ve gone very much back to basics; pretty much like a bodyboard sock with latex sole. A very thin sole.

They also come with a bunch of interesting prints. I chose the ones that said ‘FUCK 0FF’ for obvious reasons.

In an unprecedented break from protocol, I put put boots on yesterday, November 26th, in order to test them for this review (working on the Sabbath!).

They fit very snug, in fact, you might struggle to get em on the first time out. If you have wide plates like me, you might feel the pinch a bit.

We’ve all got our cross to bear.

The ride comfort was supreme. They said ‘like barefoot’. It sure was close. I went for the 2 mil option, and they felt great. If your main beef with boots is the general clunkiness of them, Wetty could well be the solution.

Gregoire from Wetty told me to wax the sole before the first use. 0bviously I agonised a bit over how exactly to go about that… What, like wax em at home and end up at the beach with a hundred ciggy butts and pine needles on my boots? Bit weird…

I elected to wax em, and then cycle to the beach barefoot, put em on at the water’s edge. Great move. They gripped a treat, and I didn’t bring any unwanted debris. The waxing is only for the first use, after which they’ll grip just fine.

A very fine, warm and comfy boot, ideal for high performance surfing, or in my case, low performance, but edgy.
