It’s never too late to turn your life around.
Take Edward Blomfield, for example. He wasted all of his twenties and most of his thirties up various mountains, glorifying white privilege as Editor of Whitelines (snowboarding) Magazine.
Then, one day, whilst writing a Google-facing product review of a pair of Grenade Gloves over breakfast in a clean but hateful Novotel outside Grenoble, he had a Road to Damascus moment.
He stood up, threw his muesli yoghurt bowl at the wall, bellowed “I can’t live with this lie anymore!” and promptly swished (he was wearing snowboard pants) purposefully to his car. “I want to shred the unfrozen wave!” he repeated for the duration of a ten hour drive to a place where the sun dips faithfully over the sea each eve.
Now safely relocated in the surfing hotbed of Truro, Cornwall (which has an average August daily high temp of 19 celsius), Ed has opened his eyes to the near endless possibilities of sea-level stoke. He checks Windguru most days, sometimes Magic Seaweed too. (Surf Europe, less so).
He recently shot the above vid at Cornish reefbreak Porthleven, and wept openly at the beauty of it all as he was putting his tripod in the boot of a mid-size 2013 estate car.
Enjoy the film. Dig the shred of fine English rippers like Jayce Robinson, Harry de Roth and Sam Lamiroy. But mostly, remember: Be the best version of you, next swell. Even if that means flying a drone over people trying to surf, and stealing the music of Led Zeppelin.
