Successful comebacks are like happy endings, you could write a movie or a documentary about it. The Occy come back from his couch years to win a world title is the most famous and celebrated one but this year, behind all the Tour talks, a similar story is in the making.
Chris ‘Davo’ Davidson, sure that name rings a bell. Remember the golden Search years withTom Curren, Franky and the feral crew, well, circa 1998, Davo was a star. Winning contests, freesurfing secret locations in front of the best lensmen and cameramen. Everything was going his way, he was one of the spoiled child of the surf industry. He burnt the candle by both ends quickly and everyone loved him for it. The perfect rebel & bad boy for his sponsors!
Then came the dreadful years, dropping out of the WCT, not making a heat, injuries, family problems, drugs etc. It is a common story happening to an un common surfer. You wouldn’t have bet a dollar at that time on the guy believe me…
And slowly but surely, Davo walked his way up the ladder again. Getting rid of the old habits, getting is confidence level back up. Learning how to use efficiently his energy and raw talent. Learning how to curb the ‘loose canon’ attitude. On the WQS, winning the Super Series 2008 in Hossegor, requalifying and making the final in 2009 in Mundaka. This year, he had a good run so far, sitting just outside the top 15 on the World tour and just blew his final against Gabe Kling at the Nike 6.0 in Trestles. Everyone is impressed, sponsors are still a bit shy…is this really a new Davo !? Sure, he is not a title contender but as Davo puts it “I am on a roll. I am fit and training hard. I’ve got good boards from my shaper Warner and I am loving life at the moment.” No need for extra insight on Davo’s season, the man has seen the dark depths of pro surfing, now is back and kickin’ at the very top and unlike a lot of pro surfers these days, he has a story to tell !
