If you didn’t stay up all night yesterday watching the Quik Pro, fret not. Surf was mediocre and there wasn’t a whole lot to get excited about, but what was worth seeing has been conveniently gathered together into the highlight reel above.
In brief: Fanning breezed through his Round 1 heat despite a strong performance from the impressive Wade Carmichael, Medina found a big score late on to get past Seabass, and Toledo bounced and spun into the 3rd round without too much trouble. Elsewhere Taj and Jeremy got their seasons off to winning starts with some sprightly surfing, Wilko’s backhand hacks felled Kelly Slater, Wiggolly Dantas posted the day’s highest heat score (17.26) to get past Jordy Smith, and Parko dismissed John John and rookie Jack Freestone. Last year’s finalist Julian Wilson was diverted into Round 2 by Michel Bourez, but the day’s biggest upset (was anyone all that upset about it?) came in Heat 6, when mullet-sporting wildcard Mikey Wright beat world champ Adriano de Souza. Nat Young and Italo Ferreira also advanced.
