Several thursdays ago, while Praia do Norte was dishing up giant burgers with a hefty side-order of wedges, not too far down the Portuguese coast Supertubos was offering a slightly smaller and marginally more friendly alternative in the form of thunderous close-out barrels. In between the ones that collapsed along the length of the beach in unison, there was a smattering of waves here and there that looked like they might be just about makeable, and one or two that actually were.
Young South African big-wave specialist Matt Bromley just wanted to clock up some tube time, so he eschewed Nazaré and opted to brave the smell of canned fish, heading for Peniche instead.
