The Pipeline Masters got off to an early start with Rounds 1 and 2 being completed yesterday in six-to-eight foot conditions, with Backdoor offering most scoring opportunities.
Upsets included Triple Crown threat Ezekiel Lau, who won Sunset, suffering an early exit to Pat Gudauskas. 2011 Pipe winner and tour veteran Kierren Perrow unfortunately managed to dislocate his shoulder on what was his last wave on tour. Ryan Callinan defeated Dane Reynolds, while Gabes Medina put together the highest heat total of the day to eliminate Bruce Irons.
“I got a little bit lucky,” Medina said. “I got three really good barrels and did the air at the end. I was watching the guys always getting big scores at Backdoor and had them in my mind. Somehow, I found those lefts and that was such a fun heat. I’ve always watched Bruce (Irons) and I really respect him. To be surfing with him is a dream come true.”
Medina’s work ain’t over yet though, as he’ll now go on to face John John in Round 3.
Other on-form competitors included last year’s Triple Crown winner Sebastian Zietz and 2010 Pipe Champion Jeremy Flores, both of whom notched perfect 10-point rides.
Round 3 is expected to run today, which will see top seeds enter the draw and the hotly-anticipated title race between Kelly and Mick kick off again.
