Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) would like to thank all the volunteers for helping at The Big SAS Spring Beach Clean. Last Sunday, the 1st of March, over 80 people gave up their time to help out at The Big SAS Spring Beach Clean. As a result of all those great volunteers and their hard work, 103 bags of litter were collected and Porthtowan was visibly transformed from a beach littered with junk to a relatively clean beach.

The sun shone and the beach was packed with volunteers. The atmosphere was brilliant, friends were made and everyone felt an effective part of a successful SAS campaign. During The Big SAS Spring Beach Clean the SAS green postbox was on the beach and all the identifiable marine litter collect was posted in as part of the Return To Offender campaign. SAS campaigners will send all of the 207 pieces of identifiable litter collected back to the manufacturer, calling on them to improve their anti littering message, bring in new low impact materials, reduce/reuse/recycle their packaging as well as supporting grass roots beach cleans.

As always, SAS provided all the equipment needed for the beach clean. And once again the Blue Bar was generous enough to offer free coffees to all the volunteers. Falmouth Surf School also offered free surf lessons to anyone that joined them from Falmouth, and as you’d imagine, they brought a van full of volunteers. So SAS would also like to thank the Blue Bar and Falmouth Surf School, and also everyone who gave up their Sunday to help out, only with the fantastic levels of support can we make such a positive impact on Porthtowan beach.

Initially the volumes of litter on the beached shocked everyone involved. This may have spurred the volunteers on as they collected an extraordinary amount of litter from the beach, the majority of which was plastic, a persistence and harmful pollutant.
