Bob & Sink: The Trial and Error of Ryan Burch

“It’s not how it comes across to other people, it’s how entertained I am!”

Underground San Diego surfer-shaper’s Ryan Burch has been leading an alternative vision to your standard, run-of-the-mill shortboard mentality for a few years now. In fact, perhaps never before in surfing history has a surfer evolved from a conformist framework to so fully explore the entire spectrum of wave riding design and performance.

“Contest surfing was always a bit like school for me…” says Ryan, “You’re going home and you’re doing your homework coz you kinda have to to be a part of the game. [But] when you get out of school if you care to better your knowledge then you start searching for the truth and start trying to learn beyond what people can teach you.”

In this rad 10-minute short, Korduroy TV go back and take a look at the various experimentations and gradual evolution Burch has gone through, from his traditional shortboard up-bringing to the longboard, twinny, far-out finless Rabbit’s Foot and other wild asymmetrical shapes. Oh, and watch for his recent trip to Mundaka 2/3rds of the way through!

For more details on some of Ryan’s boards, check out our recent quiver piece we did with him?
