South African Twiggy Baker Clinches Big Wave World Tour

The super clean conditions Nelscoff Reef witnessed last Friday were just too good to refuse, with Californian Alex Gray winning his first ever big wave event at the Dive’n Surf Oregon Pro. Photo: BWWT/Hallman

Conditions weren’t exactly XXXL for last week’s Nelscoff Reef big wave event (although you sure wouldn’t have caught us paddling out!) but super clean morning conditions was enough for the Dive n’ Surf Oregon Pro to go ahead, the 5th stop of 2013/2014’s Big Wave World Tour.

At the end of a thrilling day of big drops on both the rights and lefts, it was eventually California’s Alex Gray (who scored a perfect 10-point ride) who won his first big wave event to date, taking out Mavericks local Shawn Dollar who ended up in second place after charging the lefts harder than anyone.

In third place, South African ratings leader Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker did enough to secure himself this year’s Big Wave World Tour title following his two earlier victories this year in Europe at the Punta Galea Challenge and another at this year’s very challenging Mavericks Invitational event. Having never surfed Nelscoff Reef, it was a pretty solid performance who said the place reminded him of Dungeons (South Africa’s big wave spot which joins the your next year).

There does nevertheless remain one more big wave event on this year’s calendar, at Todos Santos in Mexico. However, as with the rest of the legs on tour this will only run if another big enough swell pulse (20ft-plus) arrives before the end of the waiting period which is set to end 31st March.

For the girls, it was local charger Bianca Vallenti who made the most of her local knowledge to oust Andrea Moller and Keala Kennelly.
